Oral Health Tips for Kids

Written by Paul Vera on April 15th, 2022.

Having a beautiful smile that lasts a lifetime isn’t about luck, especially when it comes to dental care for kids. Although teeth are meant to last a lifetime, certain habits and lifestyle choices can put them at risk. Here are a few oral health tips for kids that can help keep your child’s smile beautiful.

Set A Dental Routine

You’ve heard this advice your whole life, so now it’s time to implement it with your kids. After all, it’s the most important thing you can do for a smile. Brush teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled brush. Use gentle, circular motions while using toothpaste that contains fluoride to keep the outer layer of the teeth strong. Floss every day to get to those hard-to-reach areas in between teeth.

Eat Well to Feel Well

You’ve heard that you are what you eat. This is true even when it comes to your smile. Children tend to gravitate towards foods high in sugar or carbohydrates, leading to cavities, plaque, and gum disease. Foods that are very hard, like popcorn kernels, can crack their teeth. This is why we recommend a diet that is high in nutrients, like those found in fruits and vegetables.

Protect Their Pearly Whites

It’s no secret that kids have a lot of energy. Protect teeth from getting knocked out while playing sports or running around by opting for an athletic mouthguard. We can fit your child with a custom mouthguard at their next appointment!

Don’t Give Up on Their Smile

It can be discouraging at times to remind your child about the importance of good oral care. If you’re of the mindset that your child will never learn how to brush or floss daily, don’t be! We can help you. At their dental visits we can help them improve their brushing and flossing techniques. And if problems crop up, modern dentistry can correct a myriad of things, from the simple to the complex. It’s never too late to improve your child’s smile.
